Congratulations to the South Western side on winning the Bing Wallder Shield event that was conducted at the club over the weekend.

This event has been held annually in Zone 8 for over fifty years and the South Western side last won the competition in 1992.

Prior to 26th July 2022 there were six districts in Zone 8 and each district selected a side to play in the Shield event. The sides that played over the weekend represented those same areas – Albury, Riverina, Wagga, Southern Slopes, Southern Highlands and South Western.

Each side consisted of 16 players – four teams of fours – and played five games over the two days. A side win was worth 2 points and a side draw was worth 1 point.

After the completion of three games on Saturday there were two sides that had won their three games – Wagga and South Western – and they were drawn to play each other in the fifth game.

Both sides won their fourth games on Sunday so that their fifth game became a final for the event.

South Western won on two rinks and scored 55 shots while Wagga won on two rinks and scored 54 shots to make South Western the overall winners with 10 points.

In their earlier games South Western defeated Southern Highlands 60–41, Albury 53–50, Southern Slopes 49–40 and Riverina 49–47.

For South Western two teams – Jono Watson, Jason Jones, Russell Boyd and Peter Watts and Chris Hocking, Terry Ricketts, Tom Glover and Brian Madden – won four of their five games.

The best performed team was the Wagga team of John Hetherington, Corey Hazell, Sean Smith and Brett White who won four games and had a draw in one game.

Thanks to all the club members, club staff and caterers for their contributions in making this weekend a success.

During the week there were 18 players for Thursday afternoon bowls.

There were two close games – Brian Christie and Les Fanning won their game by 1 shot, Terry Cannon and Glen Benson won their game by 2 shots. There were also two games with bigger margins – Jim McQuade, Allan Langford and Ian Schofield winning by 15 shots and Austin Crampton and Brian McNair winning by 20 shots.

The Zone 8 Open Pennant Finals will be played this weekend in five grades.

The club has two sides contesting the finals.

In Grade 3 Young play Junee at Cootamundra Ex–Services Club on Sunday 28th starting at 12 pm in a straight out final.

For Grade 7 there are six clubs involved and they will play at North Albury.

This is a knock-out event with Young playing Wagga Rules on the Saturday morning. If they are successful in that game they will play a composite Adelong/Tarcutta side on Saturday afternoon.

Players are reminded to check the information concerning a Men’s Pairs Tournament to be played at the club on 25th and 26th May.

The new Riverina–Murray Region that will come into operation from 1st July will have a number of sub–committees.

Information concerning Expressions of Interest to be a member of a sub–committee is on display at the club.
