The Lions Club of Young welcomed Young Public School Year 5 student, Ruby Holt at their dinner meeting on October 28.

Accompanied by her mother, Karina, and Public Speaking Coordinator, Mrs Wendy Robinson, Ruby’s five-minute presentation was titled ‘Racism, It’s Everyone’s Business’.

During her speech, Ruby shared with the members that one in five Australian residents experienced racism.

She went on to inform those present that 40 percent of this racism occurs in public spaces leaving people feeling alone.

The point was made that racism was not just adult business.

After Ruby’s well-received speech, Mrs Robinson gave her presentation, sharing with members that public speaking was an important life skill, but was also one of the most dreaded forms of communication.

Teaching children public speaking gives them the skills to think on their feet and express their ideas and opinions, thereby encouraging young people to lead and persuade others and ultimately boost their confidence.

Over the past few years, the school has had some successes in the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition.

Last year at the Western and Regional Competition they had one Highly Commended and another student win the 5 and 6 section and go on to the State competition in Sydney.

Ruby went on to achieve a Highly Commended and Runner-up at the Western and Regional Competition.

After the presentation, a thank you was given by Secretary Stuart Freudenstein and President Paul Miller presented gifts of appreciation.

Those assembled then enjoyed a meal together. Other special guests on the night included Trish Cant, Graeme Butt and John McKnight.

Anyone who would like to join the Lions Club can contact Lyn Freudenstein.
