Anneliese Shines At Lions Youth Of The Year Public Speaking Competition
Anneliese Rothe wins the Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking competition for 2024, with her speech Doomsday Clock.
Young Anneliese Rothe gave a thought-provoking speech during this year’s Lions Youth of the Year Public Speaking Programme (YOTY), a public speaking competition for students in senior school years 10, 11 and 12.
She delivered her speech on her thoughts on the Doomsday Clock and 90 seconds to midnight; about turning the clock back to a time before climate change, artificial intelligence and how simple changes in mindset could change the world.
She spoke about holding companies accountable and stopping pollution, technology increasingly taking over, and how we needed to give greater value to honesty.
Her speech touched on what makes us humans, diversity and turning back the clock together.
Anneliese will now contest the next level of YOTY at Cowra on March 8, 2025.
Lions Junior Public Speaking contenders were also on fire this year.
Publicity Officer Heather Miller said we were in great hands.
“Our youth are the future, and they are ultimately defined by the things they say and do as young people,” Ms Miller said.
“The Junior Public Speaking competition sets these students ahead of their peers.”
“Their vision and how they look at the society they live in, to make a difference.”
“Students in Years 3 to 4 were given a topic and asked to give a one-minute speech having only 10 minutes to prepare.”
Finn Gordon was declared the winner, with Olivia Rosser runner-up.
Students from Years 5 and 6 had an immediate response to the impromptu question before they could deliver their own prepared speech.
Maeve Reid claimed the victory.
Sue Gordon, Janice Ottey, Lindy Saines and Stuart Freudenstein judged the students’ speeches, and it was no easy task, with only minimal points separating the contenders.
