Australia Day Celebrated Across The Hilltops

Hilltops celebrated Australia Day in style with a variety of activities and ceremonies taking place across the region.

Boorowa held most of their Australia Day celebrations at the Boorowa Recreation Grounds, beginning with the Boorowa Lions Club breakfast.

The official ceremony followed the breakfast. During the ceremony, the award winners for this year’s Boorowa’s Australia Day awards were announced.

Following the awards ceremony was the Boorowa Rotary Rubber Duck Race.

Winners of the Boorowa Rotary Rubber Duck Race were:

  • 1st duck 73 - J Dymock, M Dwyer
  • 2nd duck 114 - C Merriman, C & J Mahoney,
  • 3rd duck 276 - C Nowland.

Celebrations in Boorowa continued into the afternoon with more activities including a 9 hole golf competition.

Harden Murrumburrah also began their Australia Day celebrations with breakfast.

Australia Day Ambassador Mr Peter McLean, Executive Officer of the Australian Organics Recycling Association, former NSW CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful announced the Harden Australia Day Award winners, presenting them with their awards.

Mr Peter McLean was also the Australia Day Ambassador for Wombat and announced the Wombat Australia Day Award winners during the official ceremony (full list of award winners below) Activities included camel rides, a tractor pull, an antique engine display, thong races and best dressed competitions.

Winner of the Senior Brendon Holmes Memorial Best Dressed Competition was Bobby Long.

Rayan Donges was the winner of the Junior Brendon Holmes Memorial Best Dressed Competition.

Young’s Australia Day celebrations took place at Carrington Park.

The Australia Day Ambassador for Young was award winning journalist and presenter Mr Michael Tomalaris, who announced the Young Australia Day Award winners during the official ceremony.

The Rotary Club of Young’s Australia Day Lunch in the Park BBQ was a huge hit following the official ceremony and the celebrations carried on into the afternoon with children’s entertainment Just Circus Box.

Entry to Hilltops Council’s pools in Boorowa, Harden, Jugiong, and Young was also free which was very welcome given the heat.

The Hilltops region celebrated our national day and honoured those local people who have done so much to make it such a special place to live.
