Books-For-Bunyips

Rotary Club of Murrumburrah-Harden have been able to gift each child at the Bunyip Preschool and Daycare with a book thanks to some generous funding support.

There are so many reasons why a book makes a wonderful gift at any time of the year, and the Rotary Club of Murrumburrah-Harden obviously agrees.

Last year, Rotarian Rita O’Connor received a grant from the Rotary Foundation and bought books for every primary school child in Harden.

The program was so successful that Bendigo Bank sponsored Rotary to re-run the program this year.

“The primary school kids loved receiving books and the schools found more engagement with reading,” Ms O’Connor said.

“I choose the books and we give them to the kids twice a year.”

“During this year, I reapplied to the Rotary Foundation to extend the program to Year 7 and 8 students and we have gifted them with one book so far, with another one due at the end of the year.”

“Bunyip contacted me and I did a bit of a reshuffle with money and had enough to give each of the 118 Bunyip children one book each last week.”

“We will give the primary school children another book each before the end of the year.”

The program would be impossible without the generosity of the Rotary Foundation District Grants and the Harden-Murrumburrah Community Bendigo Bank.

The grants received from these sources have allowed every child at Bunyip to receive one book this year.

One of the focus areas for Rotary International is education and literacy, so this local program fits this area of focus very well.
