Inspired by the Alice Springs Beanie Festival, the Boorowa Beanie & Beret Competition features an incredible range of extraordinary, fabulous beanies and berets.

The Beanie & Beret Competition is a well-loved and interactive element of the world-famous Boorowa Irish Woolfest, and is a fundraiser for Australian Rotary Health’s “Lift the Lid” campaign to research and reduce stigma around mental illness.

The theme for the 2022 Woolfest Beanie & Beret Competition is “Spring”. Boorowa Rotary is inviting everyone to help celebrate the wonderful feeling of springtime: that great feeling of sunshine, colour, fun, warmth and joy!

The definition of a beanie or beret is anything that is hand-made from any material, that is wearable and provides some warmth.

Everyone is invited to make an extraordinary beanie or beret using any technique. People can knit, crochet, felt, weave or sew a beanie. Or they could even make one out of paper, wood, metal, whatever can be used to create that wonderful springtime feeling.

There are seven categories in the competition with great prizes in each. They are:

1. The Madcap Springtime Champion Prize - A beanie that invites interaction and fun with spring

2. The Fun of Layering - Embroider, scrumble, bead, dye, weave; use a mix of techniques

3. Recycled/Earth Friendly - Using recycled or natural materials, hand spun or natural dyes, create a fabulous springtime beanie

4. Springtime on the Land - Using agricultural materials/resources

5. Irish Woolfest Beanie - Prize for an outstanding piece of work representing a love for Woolfest

6. New Wave Beanie - Encouragement Prize - For a school-aged beginner beanie maker (5 – 10 years old)

7. New Wave Beanie - Prize - For a school-aged, advanced beanie maker (11 – 16 years old).

Entries must be received no later than Friday the 16th of September 2022.

More information, including entry forms, is on the Boorowa Irish Woolfest website at irishwoolfest.com.au
