Did you know that the Boorowa Branch of the CWA was formed at a meeting held on the 16th of November 1923 at the instigation of Mrs Hannah Josephine Corcoran (1871-1925)?

At this meeting, the first Boorowa Branch committee was elected:

  • President: Mrs Ada Bevan (nee Croker) (1877-1939). Mrs Bevan was the wife of the Boorowa Post-Master, John Lewis Bevan.
  • Vice-Presidents: Mrs Hannah Corcoran and Mrs McKinnon, who was the wife of C. A. M. McKinnon, a member of the Boorowa Pastoral and Agricultural and Horticultural Society.
  • Secretary: Mrs Helen Spicer (nee Hume) (1887-1960). Mrs Spicer was the wife of Cyril Mortlock Spicer, and lived at “Campbellfields.”
  • Additional committee members were elected, namely committee Mrs Billyard-Leake of Kenyu Station and Mrs Sarah Morgan (1853-1940).

A Treasurer, a “Miss Corcoran,” was later elected. It seems likely that this Miss Corcoran was one of Hannah Corcoran’s daughters, i.e., Kathleen M (1902 – 1925) or Eileen Josephine (1905 – 1995).

To commemorate its centenary, the newly revived Boorowa Branch is planning all kinds of activities, including the production of a “Boorowa CWA Cookbook.”

Leading this project is Joint President and Secretary, Karen Smith. Karen has been researching the history of Boorowa CWA and is now putting out a call to the community to get in touch with her.

Karen explained, “We would love former members of Boorowa CWA, or people whose grandmothers, mothers, sisters, and aunts belonged to the group to get in touch with photos of members and recipes that were dear to their hearts.

“We want to be able to talk about the contribution that Boorowa CWA has made to the community, as well as the stories of individual members.”

Karen asks that people contact her either by email: secretaryboorowacwa@gmail.com or by post at: 59 Market Street, Boorowa, NSW 2586.
