Boorowa CWA Meeting

CWA

Are you a woman who’s passionate about improving conditions for people in Boorowa?

Do you want to contribute to an organisation with a proven track record for making a difference?

This year the NSW Country Women’s Association (CWA) turned 100 years of age.

While it seems the organisation has always been around, it was the direct result of a Bushwoman’s Conference held in Sydney in April 1922.

The very first branch that opened that year was in Crookwell, led by Mrs Florence Laver.

The Boorowa Branch followed quickly after, in 1923.

Since its inception the CWA has proved to be a formidable lobby and advocacy group. Its most notable achievements to date have been the construction of cottage hospitals and baby health clinics to reduce the incidence of maternal and infant mortality.

When educational opportunities were found to be lacking for country school children, the CWA opened hostels in Sydney and funded scholarships.

When it was found that outback women were desperate for a place to escape the summer heat, the organisation built seaside homes and mountain retreats.

CWA rooms were built across the state, not only to provide a place for meetings, but also as respite for weary shoppers and accommodation for shoppers from remote areas.

Before the time of mandatory seat belt wearing, the CWA lobbied for seatbelts in every car.

Due to the impact of COVID lockdowns and a decline in numbers, the Boorowa Branch of the CWA has been in recess since November 2021.

It is now coming out of hibernation, but only if more local women get behind it.

To explain the proposal, the following meeting is being held:

Time and Date: 1pm-3pm Thursday 1st September 2022

Location: Boorowa Ex-Services and Citizens Club, Pudman Street, Boorowa The Boorowa Branch held a stall at the recent Rotary Markets in Boorowa, and found that there was quite a bit of interest from local women, especially younger women.

It is therefore proposed that a further night time meeting will be held to ensure that all women can attend.

It is likely that the committee will be elected at the night time meeting.
