Boorowa Gun Club Monthly Competition

Boorowa Gun Club were pleased to host 64 local and interstate shooters recently for a day/night competition which included a night State Double Rise and night Commonwealth Deauville Doubles title.

The day’s competition began with the 25 target handicap. Cooper Mooney from Goulburn has been in fine form lately, recently moving back to 25 metres. He proved on the weekend it was no fluke with a 25/25 from 25 metres, in far from ideal conditions. Ron Bou-Moussa also shooting the possible took out second after a shoot off. The shoot off for third place was a serious event going for a full 25 targets. Local Damian Rowett had to fight it out with Jean Moussalem from Sydney. Neither looked like missing with the result only decided on the last shot of the 25 targets, Damian shooting a 25/25 to win the shoot off and take third place in the event.

The second event for the day, the 75 target George Campbell Memorial, is eagerly anticipated each year with many of the Campbell family in attendance. The overall winner for the event which consisted of 25 targets double barrel, 25 targets single barrel and 25 targets point score was Boorowa Gun Club member Darryl Reid with an impressive 124/125.

First in AA was Tony Barton with Glenn Barton in second. A Grade was won by Don Turner after a shoot off with Rex Murphy who took out second place. B Grade was won by Bob Churchill with Damian Rowett coming second. C Grade was won by Tye Handsaker with John Thistleton coming second.

After a hearty and tasty dinner, the burn barrels were fired up as there was a bite in the air and the NSW State Night Double Rise competition got under way. For those unfamiliar with Double Rise, it is a challenging event where 2 targets are launched at 45 degrees to each other and the shooter needs to shoot both if possible, difficult in the daylight and even more so under lights.

Grady Evans shot the best on the night with a 47/50 to take out the overall win. Tracey Barton hot on his heels with a 46/50 had to be content with 1st in AA Grade.

A Grade 1st place was Karen Berry with a 41/50, first in B Grade was Laurie Arnold with a 44/50. First in C Grade was Dempsey Farrell-Gray with a 30/50.

The Commonwealth Night Deauville Doubles was next and the most prestigious event of the day. A similar event to the Double Rise in that 2 targets are released at the same time. The difference is that it is shot with a partner from the 24 metre mark with both targets having to be broken to score a point. The dynamic duo of Grady Evans and Justin Smith came out on top winning the Commonwealth Blue sashes.

The overall High Gun for the day was Grady Evans with a 193/200. The Ladies High Gun winner was Tracey Barton with a 186/200. The Junior High Gun was won by Blake Gruber with a 175/200 and the Veterans High Gun was won by Cliff Dykes with a 189/200.

Boorowa Gun Club’s next event will be a Come and Try Day which is aimed at new shooters or people wanting to try clay target shooting for the first time. The Come and Try Day will be held on Saturday 18 May 2019. Registrations are required beforehand through the Shooting Australia website.

The Club’s next competition shoot will be held on Saturday 25th May. It is another major event. The Central Zone Champion of Champions and the competition begins at 11.00am.

If you are interested in having a try at clay target shooting, the Boorowa Gun Club is open for practice for members and for beginners every Tuesday evening from 5.00 till 7.30pm. All ages and abilities 12 years and up. Photo ID is required and minors require a legal guardian present.
