Boorowa Landcare celebrates recognition from NSW Landcare Awards 2024.

Boorowa Landcare was recently up for a Landcare NSW Award for its part in a special event held in Yass in 2018.

Though they did not win, Boorowa Landcare Coordinator, Amber Kelly said being a finalist and recognised for their efforts was very special and rewarding.

Yass and Hovells Creek joined with Boorowa to organise an event about climate change attended by 200 people at the Yass Hall in May on 2018.

Although not the Boorowa Landcare Coordinator at the time of the event, Ms Kelly said that Boorowa Community Lanedcare Group was excited to be recognised with neighbouring groups Hovells Creek and Yass Area Network as a finalist in the NSW Landcare Awards Climate Innovation category 2024.

“The Climate Conversation was one held at a time when people were craving independent, reliable information about the unpredictable climate and the effect it would have on our landscapes, our farmers and our communities,” Ms Kelly said.

“It was one of the first activities that brought our sub-region of the South East region together, a collaboration of Landcare networks in the North West of the South East that we remain very proud of.

“The planning team met many times over several months to design an event that met the needs of the landcare members in the community.

“After determining the purpose of the gathering, they identified keynote speakers who could deliver the various sessions.

“The organisers also invited many resource providers to support the day with their information stalls.

“The day was specifically designed with only four keynote speakers and they left a generous amount of space for questions and incidental conversations at lunch time.”

The keynote speakers were:

  • Dr Bradley Opdyke, paleoclimatologist from the Australian National University;
  • Dr Charles Massey, woolgrower and author;
  • Dr Christine Jones, founder of Amazing Carbon; and
  • Dr Siwan Lovett, Australian River Restoration Centre.
