Walking is great for our health and it sometimes doubles for a bit of social awareness exercise - like with Boorowa Lions Club’s first Walk for Diabetes event on the weekend.
Secretary of Boorowa Lions Marilyn Miller said they enjoyed setting the day up.
“Each person, when registering, received a map of the course, a pencil and a list of questions about diabetes,” Ms Miller said.
“We enjoyed setting it up and leaving answers displayed around our riverwalk.”
“Diabetes is heading to be of urgent concern worldwide, and this year it is one of our focus areas both locally and internationally.”
“Brochures were handed out at the end for walkers to take away and we finished up with a barbecue sausage sizzle.”
“The inclement weather kept people indoors, but it turned out to be a lovely day, warming up as it went.”
Ms Miller said that while the event had been organised to raise awareness of diabetes, rather than a fundraiser, they did receive donations on the day.
“There was no charge for the day but we were thrilled to accept donations of $80 which will be sent on to the Australian Lions Diabetes Foundation,” Ms Miller said.
“As usual, Lions do not take administration costs out of donations, so anything donated goes completely to the particular cause.”
Next on the agenda for Boorowa Lions Club will be the annual Carols in the Park in December, where they will be cooking their delicious sausage sandwiches.
