Boorowa’s Christmas Luncheon
The Boorowa community loves to get together and enjoy a good meal and lively company, and the next opportunity is Christmas Day lunch.
Chatting with an older lady before COVID, Jenny Cooper was dismayed to learn that the woman had had a vegemite sandwich for Christmas lunch.
“I said that was never going to happen again,” Ms Cooper said.
“The sad thing was she passed away before the next Christmas.”
That single encounter fired a desire in Ms Cooper to ensure that everyone had a delicious Christmas meal on Christmas Day with people to enjoy it with.
The Boorowa Community Christmas lunch is held at the St John’s Church Hall.
“The Church Council has come on board with support this year,” Ms Cooper said.
“It is all run on donations and volunteers.”
Ms Cooper said there were 60 people booked in for the free lunch this year - the average is between 50 and 60 people.
There is ham, chicken, turkey, roast pork, salads, cherry pies and plum puddings on the menu this year.
“A lot of them just come for the company,” Ms Cooper said.
“We had 65 people come for a recent community lunch and there was a whole turn up of men who hadn’t seen each other for a while and they all had a great time.”
“It’s about enjoying a day with company - the food is a bonus.”
