Every Tuesday morning, barring Easter and Christmas Day, a group of people gather at the Boorowa Recreational Club to undertake needlework.
The Tuesday Needlework Group has been in existence for 25 years, and originated when approximately 12 women were undertaking a TAFE outreach needlework course.
The weekly course took place at the Frogmore Hall, but sadly the Hall was destroyed in a fire and the group subsequently moved to the Boorowa Recreational Club.
When the course ended, two members of the group, Anne Medway and Sina Banks, decided to continue the practice of gathering together each Tuesday to share needlework techniques.
They broadened participation in the group to all interested people from Boorowa and surrounding districts, and so a tradition was born.
Anne and Sina are still on hand to provide guidance on all manner of needlework techniques: from counted cross-stitch to handanger, and the repertoire of activities now includes crochet and knitting. They have also organized demonstrations of various crafts such as wool carding and spinning, jewellery-making, quilting, and bag-making.
But there is something else that is equally appreciated by participants. Regular participants Glenys Dymock and Sandi Piper hint at this when they say the group provides newcomers to Boorowa and district, like themselves, with a great opportunity of making friends.
Participants in the Needlework Group share valuable life lessons, support each other through life’s difficulties, and stitch together in pursuit of a more peaceful, beautiful life.
The Tuesday Needlework Group is open to men and women of all ages and stages, and the cost is $2 per week. This money is used at the end of the year to provide a celebratory get-together. Please come along.
