It should be mentioned up-front until last Saturday, your Boorowa journalist was not a fan of car shows. However, “Cars on the Green”, held at the Boorowa Recreation Club on the 15th October changed all that.

There were cars on display that harked back to the early days of the twentieth century, such as a beautiful 1929 Chevrolet Tourer. Then there were cars from the middle of the century such Morris Minors, cars from the 60s such as Ford Falcons, and Holdens complete with venetian blinds, and even a moss encrusted Volkswagen Beetle.

There were cars from the 70s such as Toranas, and an immaculate 1970 HG GTS Monaro, and even a modern Ford Mustang, which kept a certain husband entranced for some time.

The one thing all the cars had in common was owners with passion. We spoke with Allan and Fran Byrnes from Boorowa about their five entries, one of which was a beautifully restored caravan from the 50s. Allan explained that his idea at first had been to restore a vehicle and then sell it for profit. The thing of it though was that he fell in love with each one as it was completed, and it would hurt too much to let it go.

At the end of the day there had to be a winner, and the judge’s decision would have been difficult.

Patrick O’Brien won the Dr Sarah Cope Memorial Award for Car of the Show for his 1970 HG GTS Monaro. Sarah passed away a little over four years ago at the age of 44 from bowel cancer. She was a true car enthusiast, and she and her husband, Ian, built a beautiful hot rod together.

The Kim Lesslie Memorial People’s Choice Award went to Wayne Millynn, for his 351 GT Falcon.

Well done to everyone, and a big thank you to the Boorowa Car Club and the Recreational Club for organising it all. We’ll definitely be back next year.
