There are a variety of plants you can use to bring some festive colour into your summer garden.
Poinsettia - while poinsettias are probably the most well-known plant associated with Christmas, they traditionally flower in winter, so growers mimic the conditions to promote flowering for the southern hemisphere Christmas. The Mexican native is best planted in spring and they will naturally flower in winter.
Christmas bush - this NSW native begins flowering with creamy white flowers in spring, followed by festive red in summer, just in time for Christmas. Reaching up to 5m high, the evergreen shrub likes well drained soil and a sunny position.
Christmas bells - producing festive red and yellow bell flowers, they grow best in sandy soils to match their native growing environment of eastern NSW and Queensland and can be grown in pots. Full sun is preferred.
Christmas orchid - these evergreen natives produce tall white flowers during summer, contrasting their deep green leaves. Originally from Queensland, they require a mostly shaded position with well drained soil and good watering.
