The concert recently held at Ross Memorial Church raised an impressive $670 total for the southeast sector of the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
60 people attended the concert, travelling from Young, Cootamundra, Junee and surrounding areas as well as a good showing of locals.
Guest artist and organist David Powell combined with the Hilltops Choir for a rousing rendition of Highland Cathedral early in the concert.
Musical director of Hilltops Choir Stewart Bruce said, “The choir performed a further 12 songs from their varied repertoire including three brackets where Hilltops Choir performed from memory. Their accompanist Susan Rolfe handled all the music in very competent fashion on the Yamaha S6X grand piano.”
“Four African numbers were especially well received as they included local Barry Wooldridge accompanying on his African drum.”
“Allowing the choir shorts breaks, David Powell contributed with organ solos throughout.”
“Following an a capella choir bracket of negro spirituals, David followed up with a beautiful arrangement of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot by Ballarat composer Rosalie Bonighton.
The choir and organist combined to bring the concert to a conclusion with the Irish Blessing which worked well with the next day being St Patrick’s Day.
Stewart said he was, “thrilled to have David play the restored Dodd pipe organ as David grew up here learning his musical craft on this instrument.”
The usual delicious afternoon tea was served following the concert.
Stewart commented that “I am very proud of our choir and its achievements.
Our aim is to enjoy singing with others and this certainly came through from where I stood out front. Musically, we have come a long way and our journey continues to achieve week by week.”
