At a routine pregnancy ultrasound in April 2021, Ellie Robertson was diagnosed with Adenocarcinoma bladder cancer.
She was just 25 years old.
Since Ellie had no symptoms they may not have found the cancer had she not been pregnant.
During her second trimester, Ellie underwent two surgeries followed by a third seven weeks after her daughter, Ivy’s safe delivery, to remove the cancer and a portion of her bladder.
The surgery went well, the margins were clear and everyone was confident with the outcome.
Through regular appointments, routine cystoscopies and three-monthly CT scans, Ellie’s urologist kept a close eye on her throughout 2022.
Now, the type of cancer Ellie had was so rare that it was believed to be contained within the bladder.
Unfortunately, an abnormality was found during a routine CT scan in February this year.
A PET scan and laparoscopy confirmed the recurrence of the cancer, which had spread to her peritoneum and bowel.
Ellie had stage 4 cancer.
Her prognosis is unknown, but she has a massive fight ahead of her, including several rounds of chemo, surgeries and appointments encompassing a lot of travel time and long stays in Sydney.
While the cost of treatments, travel and accommodation increases the young family’s expenses, Ellie has been forced to stop working.
As Ellie’s mental health suffers, having to undergo treatment and spend time away from her husband and young daughter, her family has moved to relieve some of the financial pressure by creating a GoFundMe page as well as a trio of fundraising workshops.
Their hope is that it will allow Ellie to focus solely on fighting to get well.
