The Lambing Flat Young Fellowship Of Australian Writers Group and guests mingle at the group’s annual competition launch on Wednesday, August 2.

I wonder if anyone had imagined back in 1983 that a little contest devised by a community writing group in regional NSW would have gone global 40 years later?

That is exactly what the Lambing Flat Young Fellowship of Australian Writers (FAW) Group did last year.

The FAW group was thrilled with the launch of this year’s Short Story and Poetry Competition at the Young Services Club on Wednesday, August 2.

This year is the 40th time the annual competition has taken place and it has definitely seen some growth over the years.

They had 63 entries for the first competition in 1983, which was very impressive for a first-time event.

Last year, the group received 771 entries and one of those came all the way from Sri Lanka, not bad for a small regional group.

Young FAW Group hopes to receive lots of entries from the local region and really encourage everyone to have a go.

Entries are anonymous so only if you win will anybody ever know that you entered, unless you tell them yourself.

The truth is, the group believes that everyone has a story to tell and it is all about having fun. Nowhere is it stated that it has to be perfect, just enjoy the opportunity to share your story.

Entries are just $5 per story and the process is simple, just fill in the entry form.

(School children are invited to enter the competition free of charge.)
