General manager Anthony O’Reilly, Bileen Nel Hilltops Director of Infrastructure and Councillors have completed a series of community workshops across our region to consult on the Hilltops Strategic Plan (CSP).

This 10-year plan reflects the desires, aspirations and needs of our communities, Council is not wholly responsible for the strategic plan it is a working document between our communities and council.

The 4-year Delivery Program is the primary location to find information regarding how Council will deliver the objectives in the CSP. Underpinning the CSP and DP is the 1-year Operational Plan, this is the action plan for achieving the community priorities.

These plans and strategies provide Council and community clear direction on what we would like to achieve short and long term. These workshops were a great success and we all enjoyed connecting with the residents of our towns and villages, we thank you for taking the time to attend.

Waste was also a hot topic at these workshops with illegal dumping and recycling causing major issues across our region. The cost to Council and in turn rate payers is huge, sharing keys, cutting through tip fencing or illegally dumping all have negative impacts on our environment, causing contamination to soil, plants, animals and waterways.

Recycling contamination occurs when materials are sorted into the wrong recycling bin, containers are not properly cleaned, with one of the largest contaminates being plastic bags. By simply throwing something into the recycling and hoping it will end up recycled is rarely the case we all need to make a little extra effort to get this right.

Here are 3 steps you can start right now – CLEAN. SEPARATE. EDUCATE.

You can find information on all strategies including waste on the Hilltops Council website.

On another note, it is national NAIDOC week from 3-10 July 2022, this year’s theme is GET UP! STAND UP! SHOW UP!

I had the pleasure of visiting St Mary’s Catholic school last Monday to join in the NAIDOC celebrations, Aunty Malou told a story, with the year 6 children showing their excellent acting talents that emphasised respect, inclusiveness and culture. We all learnt the meaning of the Aboriginal flag, black symbolises the Aboriginal people, yellow represents the sun, the constant re-newer of life, red depicts the earth and people’s relationship with the land.
