From Hilltops Council – Brian Ingram

The tender for the construction of the joint use library and community facility at Young High School has been awarded. A works notification will be distributed to residents advising that works will commence on approximately 16 November 2020. It is very pleasing to see another project milestone achieved.

Last weekend I was pleased to attend the official opening of the upgrades at Alfred Oval. The project includes a new drainage system, dressing sheds, and clubhouse amenities. The project was funded by the NSW Government via the Stronger Country Communities Fund and is another fantastic asset for the community.

Last week, the General Manager and I had a site visit at the CSIRO Research Station in Boorowa. It was very interesting to note the many complex and important agricultural research projects happening at the facility. Council looks forward to developing our relationship with the CSIRO.

Council are currently receiving an increased number of requests for mowing and weed control across the region. Our ongoing scheduled maintenance program will address these concerns, however safety issues will be a priority. Please report any concerns direct to our Customer Service team on 1300 445 586.

I recently met with the new Hume Area Commander, Superintendent Paul Condon. We had a broad discussion about various issues including the need for a new police station in Young and strategy for COVID-19 safety protocols for orchards and their workers. We are starting to see workers arriving in the area, hopefully the storms stay away and the growers get to harvest what looks like a bumper crop this season.

It was very pleasing to see the NSW Government grant a one-off exemption for Remembrance Day 2020, allowing a maximum of 100 people to attend commemoration services. The exemption enables Councils, RSL sub-Branches and local communities to host events and gatherings for Remembrance Day and ensure the service of our veterans is honoured appropriately.

After being postponed in July due to COVID-19, NAIDOC Week is being celebrated this week. The theme for this year is Always Was, Always Will Be. NAIDOC Week is about celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements. NAIDOC Week is an important event in our annual calendar allowing us an opportunity to celebrate Australia’s cultural history and diversity.
