Staff and volunteers of Young Meals on Wheels have been busy distributing 75 knee rugs, plus some beanies, to their clients over the past couple of weeks.
The knitted and crocheted items were generously donated by the Young Wednesday Knitting Group.
Young Meals On Wheels spokesperson, Sandy said it had been a joy to see the appreciation of their clients as they were given the gifts. “We have had some very cold days this winter so they will certainly help to keep people warm,” Sandy said.
“I love that this initiative has such a community spirit - from people donating wool to the group to the skilled hands that create the items, through to them generously sharing the items with the wider community.”
Young Wednesday Knitting Group spokesperson, Patti said they currently had about 15 members and welcomed more. “They can come and crochet and knit or they can just come and have a coffee and see what we do,” Patti said. “We meet at the Young Services Club.”
They will meet next at 10 am on Wednesday, July 27. In the past they have knitted or crocheted squares to be made into blankets which were then packed and shipped around the world to refugees, the homeless or needy people through the organisation, Wrapped with Love.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group were unable to send the blankets in the usual way.
As restrictions have eased, the group turned their focus to the local community, with Young Meals On Wheels clients the grateful recipients of their beautiful handiwork this time.
Patti said that they were still creating squares to make blankets for Wrapped with Love, and usually donated around 100 blankets each year.
“If anyone has any 4ply or 8ply wool or acrylic we would really appreciate it,” she said. “They can bring it along to a meeting or leave it at the club.”
Anyone interested in learning more about the group or joining can contact Patti on 0487 762 126.
