Bands from across the region will be at PCYC Young on Sunday, October 27 from 11 am to be part of the first Rock for Recovery events to be held during Mental Health Month.

Flourish Australia Team Coordinator from Young Casey Wilton said that they were hoping to make this an annual event for Mental Health Month.

“This is a Battle of the Bands-style event,” Ms Wilton said.”

“However, we wanted the name to refer to mental health. Jessica Lavis, one of our mental health workers in Young came up with the name. Four bands have signed on to play - The Young Fellas, Ruff Cut Diamonds, Black Dog Blues and Temora High School Band. We also have a solo singer, Liam, and Leanne Simms Academy of Dance performing.”

The performances will continue throughout the day, with short breaks to accommodate some special guest speakers, including Steph Cooke MP, Seryn (R U OK Day?) and Flourish speakers.

Ms Wilton said that other community services and groups had come on board, including Young’s Relics Heritage Motor Club, the Community Hub, Wellways, R U OK? Day and Leanne Simms Academy of Dance.

“Mental health is important to everyone and stressors and changes in life can happen at any time and it’s okay to seek help,” Ms Wilton said.

“Everyone’s recovery journey is different and experiencing mental illness varies from person to person. No one should be ashamed to talk about it, knowing your peers or others have experienced mental illness and how they coped is beneficial and breaks down the stigma.”

“There is support for mental health in our community and it’s about helping each other out and not being ashamed to reach out for support. Seeking support is not just about visiting a treating professional but also about having peers, family and community support one another.”

Flourish Australia is recovery focused and has mental health workers and peer-workers with lived experience. They have a variety of funded programs to support people in the community and connect with services.

Flourish Australia (Young workgroup) has the HASI program supporting homelessness and complex mental health and NDIS for psychosocial disabilities of mental health.
