Harden Family Coordinates Cans For Can Assist

After a recent personal battle with prostate cancer, local Harden man, Steve Pinney was told he needed to slow down a bit.
Like most typical country gents, Steve doesn’t like to sit still for too long, so he thought about what he might be able to do that could keep him active and give him a purpose without being too physically demanding.
In recent years, he had been collecting cans and bottles from friends and family as a bit of pocket money for projects.
So, he started thinking about how he might be able to instead donate these funds to the Harden-Murrumburrah branch of Can Assist.
Not one to do anything by halves, Steve talked with his family about how he might be able to increase the number of cans and bottles he collected because he wanted to help locals get support during the difficult times that come along when a family member has cancer.
There was no intention of encroaching on anyone who was currently collecting cans and bottles for their own pocket-money or charity, but for anyone who hadn’t already committed their cans and bottles anywhere other than the recycling bin each week, Steve would like to help you donate them to a great cause.
His granddaughter, Jessica is the current secretary for the Harden-Murrumburrah branch of Can Assist, so they are teaming up to increase the amount of funds able to be donated through the collection of cans and bottles.
A donation point has been set up at Jessica’s place on the corner of Lucan and Swift Streets in Harden. You will see flags marking the donation point on the Lucan Street side of the corner block.
The area has space for parking vehicles while people drop off their cans, bottles or plastics.
For any regular large collections from hospitality venues, like the Light Horse Hotel, or events, or for elderly residents unable to drop off at a collection point, Steve is happy to offer a pick-up service.
Steve will regularly clean and sort all donations ready for processing through the NSW Container Deposit Scheme that provides a 10 cent refund on all eligible containers.
A monthly donation will then be deposited to the Can Assist account.
Can Assist is committed to ensuring that people within our community have access to cancer treatment and care by providing accommodation, financial assistance and practical support that enables the same opportunities and treatment choices to residents of Galong, Harden, Jugiong, Murrumburrah, Nubba and Wombat, as those who live in city centres.
If you are currently putting your empty cans and bottles in the recycling bin, please think about getting behind this great initiative instead.
