Volkswagen Scramble – Hot Scores in Harden
Saturday saw the annual presentation of the Volkswagen 4 Person Ambrose in the Scramble format on the Harden Country Club’s golf course. This was the local qualifying event for this national event that has been going now for over 25 years and always proves to be a well supported and fun team event.
Under blue skies and immaculate golf weather, some 60 players in 15 teams faced the starter for a shotgun start at 9am. As the day warmed, so too did the scoring with birdies being spat out like commas in a Donald Trump campaign speech. Players came from quite a number of South West District Clubs to be a part of the day and we thank the travellers from Young, Cootamundra, Boorowa and Temora for their involvement on the day, complementing a strong contingent also from town.
In the final wash up, just over 3 shots covered almost two-thirds of the field, such was the intensity of golf played. The 4 person, yet 1 excluded each consequential fairway shot format, is a tough format to master and can lead to some serious strategizing when played right. Do I choose the player’s shot knowing that they are excluded but we need their chipping skills? Tough calls every stroke played …..
The end of the day saw a tie for first place, separated only by a countback to determine the team that attends the regional qualifier on behalf of Harden Country Club. A stronger back 9 heralded the team of Ben Glover, Simon Glover, Ben Brady and Harry Sachs, who edged out Tom Poole, Dan McGrath, Anthony Smith and Luke Ismay – both teams scoring a very tidy 58.37 nett.
The final wash up of places and prizes went as follows:
Ben Glover, Simon Glover, Ben Brady & Harry Sachs – 58.37 W c/b
Tom Poole, Dan McGrath, Anthony Smith & Luke Ismay – 58.37 c/b
James French, Wayne Honeman, Swayde Honeman, Rick Oliver – 59.12
Craig Henman, Darcy Wenham, Aaron Moloney, Gash Hall – 59.5
Kyle Murray, Lachlan Deep, Andrew Jones, Nathan Hawkins – 59.75
Tom Crncevic, Mile Petrevski, Nikos Kalogeropoulous, Richard Milin – 60.00
The leading crew will now need to register for which regional final they wish to compete at, which is normally one of the finer courses in Canberra for our area. Were they to place highly there, the National Final beckons and is a package including 4 rounds of golf, 3 sponsor functions, return flights and 5 star accommodation at one of the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast Queensland golf courses.
Good luck chaps!
