Ben Glover Harden Open Champion
On a glorious winter weekend with the course in fighting fettle and a good crowd from around the District, Harden Country Club conducted its Open Tournament Weekend. Visitors from Young, Yass, Cootamundra and even some Canberra Clubs competed for the coveted role of Open Tournament Champion.
Scoring was at a premium for the entire field and nobody could take their eye off their game all day. Fast greens, scary pin cuts and the Course in as fine a form as it has been for quite some time, the master of all these competing conditions on the day was long term Club Champion, Ben Glover. Ben has knocked out an impressive round of 74 to claim the top prize as now Open Champion as well. Congratulations on your continued success.
Ben was an early Club House leader and must have chewed his nails to the bone as several others (including cousin Simon) looked to have 74 covered, yet in Harden’s Own Bear Trap of 16, 17, and 18, each gradually leaked a shot or two here or there to leave Ben standing on that score. Runner Up was a 5 way countback on 75 off the stick, with Sam Porter of Yass prevailing with a better back 9 score to take that prize.
Simon Glover, playing a round for the ages until the last 3 holes leaked away, still held on to claim A Grade Nett winner with a fantastic 75/68 beating the next in by 6 shots. The A Grade Stableford was picked up by another of the 75 scorers in Jake Veney of Young claiming 33 points after Simon’s 39 had already claimed best nett.
B Grade
Club Champion of only yesteryear, Peter Elliott was more shocked than anyone to hear his name read out as B Grade Champion on the day. Peter managed the course far better than his colleagues in B Grade, taking the win by 6 shots to his nearest competitor with a tidy 82 off the stick. B Grade Runner Up was John B Stephens of Cootamundra who as indicated, shot an 88.
In the B Grade nett, another surprise and belated call back to the Club was budding Club Junior Jesse Glover, continuing the family tradition and claiming the prize. Jesse had a very impressive score of 72 nett to claim this division on a countback. The B Grade stableford prize went to Benjamin Murray on 35 points.
NTP & Long Drives
The nearest the Pin on 10 went to Simon Glover and was very close, as was Sam Porters ball on 18. Jake Veney took out the long drive and it was so far up the 4th many thought the organisers had left it in a position as a goal, not a result. These three gents were rewarded with a bottle of Vino for their efforts.
Earlier Saturday 4BBB Day
As always we start our Open Tournament Weekend with a 4BBB event. Partners faced the gun in Scratch 4BBB and Nett 4BBB with an Individual stableford held in conjunction. Whilst only a modest field, a good warm up for Sunday was on offer and some laughs and interesting golf resulted.
Our Scratch 4BBB winners with a rock solid stableford result of 36 points were Yass combo of Steve Scroope & Sam Porter, 2 points clear of Jarrad Porter and Harry Plyak.
Our Nett 4BBB wwinners with a whopping 41 points considering how tough it was playing, were local burglars Craig Henman & Daniel McGrath, 2 points clear of Ron Page & Kevin Hoppe.
In the individual stableford stakes Peter Elliott gave a hint of things to come the next day with 34 points on a countback from Dan McGrath. Balls went to Dan, Ron Page, Kevin Hoppe, Tam Kennedy & Jeanette Elliott.
Captain Jeanette offered her thanks to all of the Committee, Volunteers, Greens Staff & Club Staff for making the weekend a success.
