Members of the Harden Murrumburrah community showed their support for victims of domestic and family violence at the Community Gardens on Friday afternoon, November 29.

Rotarian Rita O’Connor said the Rotary Club had joined with Zac’s Place, the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and Harden Murrumburrah Regional Development Corporation (HRDC) to host the Say No to Domestic and Family Violence Day event.

“Rotary’s Say No to Domestic Violence Day started at 7 am with nine of us decorating Neill Street, Harden in purple balloons and bows,” Ms O’Connor said.

“We teamed up with Zac’s Place, the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and HRDC to have more impact.”

“At 5:30 pm, everyone enjoyed a free sausage sizzle at the community garden, with tea and coffee courtesy of the Ladies Auxiliary in the Senior Citizens Hall.”

“All in all, it was a really good day.”

“It would have been great to see more people at the barbecue, but it is a confronting topic and sometimes people can’t bring themselves to show visible support.”

Ms O’Connor said it was clear by the number of likes on their Facebook page that it was a topic close to many people’s hearts.

“Vicky Fairfield-Smith, our child and family health nurse manager at MLHD was there and was able to help a young family in need who came to the community garden,” Ms O’Connor said.

“It made the whole day worth it.”

The group gave thanks.

“Thank you to the many local businesses who supported us by decorating their windows and putting up posters and balloons,” Ms O’Connor said.

“Thank you to everyone who helped and everyone who came to support us.”

“An especially huge thank you to Vicky Fairfield Smith - child & family health nurse manager at Murrumbidgee Local Health District, whose skills were called upon during the afternoon.”
