Boorowa’s Harry Dymock and his four crew mates from Kinross Wolaroi School won a gold medal at the Australian Rowing Championships last week.
The championships were held at Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in Perth.
The crew of Ollie Smith from Orange, Oscar Cleary from Cargo, Nic Tancred from Gulargambone with Cox Angus Peterson also from Orange had a very successful run up to the Australian Championships.
They won the NSW title in February after which they won the NSW Schoolboys Year 10 Head of the River at Penrith Rowing Centre last month. Then came the big one.
There were 28 entrants in the category from all over Australia. Crews from as far away as Rockhampton and Tasmania entered.
They drew heat number 4 which they won by 5.61 seconds over Brisbane Boys Grammar.
Next was the semi-final in which they narrowly defeated St Joseph’s from Sydney by 2.55 seconds.
The final on Friday was delayed by half a day due to a ferocious crosswind on the course.
On the Saturday, conditions were ideal for the final. The boys went out early to lead by 5.09 seconds at the 1000 metres. They held the lead at the 1500 metres by 5.19 seconds.
With schoolmates, parents and grandparents roaring encouragement to the boys, they held their rhythm over the last 500 metres thanks to superb conditioning by coach Ben Watt to ultimately win the final by 4.18 seconds.
The Hunter Valley Grammar Composite came second, with Joey’s from Sydney taking third place.
It was a great result for the boys, the school and the rowing program at Kinross Wolaroi.
