The Hilltops Choir evolved from the Choir of the Southern Cross since 2018, when a steering committee was formed to establish the choir as a community choir.

Member of the choir, Jacqueline Hicks said they currently had 22 active members from right across the Hilltops region, with many from Cootamundra and Harden as well as Young.

“Our members are very enthusiastic and willing to travel to rehearse and perform,” Ms Hicks said.

“Hilltops Choir is a community choir which welcomes all members who enjoy singing. We range from those who have never sung before they joined us, to those who have been singing for many years, mostly in choirs.”

“There are some who have musical train

ing, such as our wonderful accompanist, Stewart Bruce, who has had a long and distinguished career as a musician and teacher, and others who have come just for the love of the music.”

There is no age limit to joining the choir, just a desire and willingness to join, rehearse and perform. Ms Hicks said as they welcomed all-comers, there was no need to audition.

“We sing a variety of genres from across the ages, from folk to songs from musicals, popular tunes, as well as some sacred songs,” she said. “We have an eclectic mix in our repertoire.”

The group has performed at Harden Uniting Church, the Southern Cross Cinema, the Cherry Festival and Young Show, as well as the Harden Kite Festival. They also enjoy singing at Harden Grange. At present, they are working on Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah, music from The Prince of Egypt, The Lion King and Les Miserables.

“We have old favourites such as Rhythm of Life and Heart and Soul as well,” Ms Hicks said.

“At this point, we have locked in a performance at the Harden Kite Festival on Saturday, 12th October. We have also been invited to perform with the Sydney Male Choir later in the same month. Details will be available later. Our performances are in the planning stage.”

Hilltops Choir meets to rehearse at St John’s Parish Hall on Monday nights from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm during the school term.
