Burrowa CWA mothers group headed to Burrowa House Aged Care Facility to have a reading and bonding day with the elderly residents on Wednesday, June 14.

Understanding the importance of intergenerational relationships, and how they positively affect both the children and the elderly’s mental health, the Burrowa CWA mothers group and Burrowa House organised this day for the mutual benefit of both groups.

During COVID, many residents were unable to see their family regularly, so missed out on social interactions and relationships. Similarly, all of the children that attended the reading and bonding day were born during COVID lockdowns, missing out on many important social developments.

Residents enjoyed watching the children play, giving the babies bottles, reading books and, of course, many cuddles. The room was filled with laughter and smiles as residents reminisced and told stories of their own children when they were young.

Many of the residents spoke to the mothers in attendance and handed on much appreciated parenting advice.

One mother commented, “ My grandparents aren’t around any more and didn’t get to meet my children so this heartwarming experience gave me the opportunity to have information and advice given to me by the older generation.”

“It really put things in perspective to see how hard it was for them to parent.”

Organisers from the mothers group and Burrowa House both believe that it was a successful day with the opportunity of doing it again.

“I believe we will be doing this again in the near future. The children and the residents had so much fun and they both got so much out of it.”

“We are truly lucky to have the ability to foster this relationship,” said one of the organisers.
