There is just one month left before the annual Harden Kite Festival will take place - Saturday, October 12.

We love kites because they are bright, fun and everyone can have a go, but did you know that kites have been around since the 6th Century and used for a variety of different purposes?

Here is a little kite trivia:

  • The earliest written record of flying a kite was in China around 200 BC.

  • The Normans used kites to send signals during their invasion of England during the battle of Hastings.

  • Kite flying was banned in Japan in 1790 because a large number of people were flying kites instead of going to work.

  • Benjamin Franklin used a kite to prove that lightning was electricity.

  • A British meteorologist took the first aerial photograph with the aid of a kite in 1887.

  • The fastest recorded speed of a kite is 120mph, which is just over 193 kmph.

  • The world altitude record for a kite is 12,471 feet.

  • The record for a kite to stay aloft is 180 hours.

  • In Eastern Asia, kites are gifted to people to bring them happiness, good luck, prosperity and to cure illness.

The Harden Kite Festival is an affordable family-friendly event, with free activities and entertainment for everyone, including cultural performances, interesting market stalls, and kite decorating workshops.

There will be a kids activity alley and carnival rides to keep the youngsters entertained.

You can get an all-day rides pass for $20, which gives them unlimited rides.

Three all-day passes will set you back $50.

Entry to the festival is just $2 per person.

Delicious food and coffee will be available for purchase on the day or you can take along a BYO picnic to enjoy.
