Members from the Boorowa, Young, Forbes and Lithgow Lions Clubs visit Boorowa Central School and carry out 60 free vision screenings with students.

Last week a team of specially trained Lions club members from Boorowa, Young, Forbes and Lithgow visited Boorowa Central to do free vision screening with 60 students. They will visit St Josephs next week.

Secretary of the Lions Club of Young Stuart Freudenstein said they visited the schools ahead of time to plan the best location.

“We visit the schools ahead of time and work with them to find a suitable spot for the screenings, which involve tests around shape and colour recognition, a special 3D test, as well as a state of the art camera that helps assess eye health,” Mr Freudenstein said.

“Based on the test results, we are then able to provide advice to the school and to parents, on whether students should visit an optometrist for further assessment.”

Vision disorders can have a profound effect on a child’s growth and development - one in five children have an undetected vision problem. Up to 80 per cent of a child’s learning happens through their eyes.

Most children accept vision problems and adapt, rarely complaining as they believe everyone sees the world just like they do. The good news is that once detected, most eye conditions in children can easily be corrected.

Along with allergies and asthma, eye disorders are the most common health conditions suffered by children.

LEHP’s Children’s Vision Screening Program is the most comprehensive program currently available in Australia.
