Local writer Lyn Yates celebrates her success with her certificate and FAW State President Colleen Parker from Sydney.

For the second year in a row, local writer and poet Lyn Yates has had a story selected in the top 100 stories entered in the State Government’s Seniors’ Stories Writing Competition for the second year in a row.

Making the top 100 qualified Lyn’s story Ten Words to be included in the Seniors’ Stories Anthology Volume 10 which was launched at NSW Parliament House last month.

The story centres around Lyn’s ten-word lifelong mantra passed on to her from her mother - If a job’s worth doing, Linda, it’s worth doing well.

“My message through the story line was to have the courage ‘to be true to oneself’ have the courage to be different and not settle to just run with the mob,” Lyn said.

Drawn from her many years working with the marginalised and sufferers of chronic mental health issues, Lyn writes about the under-represented in society and is passionate about using story to reveal “...the total reality of life in all its emotional rawness…”.

Lyn has been a member of the FAW Lambing Flat Writers Group since arriving in Young in 2018 and hopes her successes will encourage other seniors to write about their life experiences.

She feels strongly about the importance and relevance of seniors passing on their stories to younger generations and encourages everyone to give it a go.

“Just press send.”
