It is a vision that you simply can’t wipe from your memory; a vision that brings tears to your eyes - watching as pure joy and astonishment transforms a little face at the opening of a small box.

That is what happens with the Operation Christmas Child boxes. You see, they are more than mere boxes of practical items. They are boxes filled with love and hope with the ability to impact more than the life of the child who opens it but that child’s whole community.

Lyn Walker has invited the community to attend the launch of this year’s Operation Christmas Child on Saturday, June 24 from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at New Life Community Church, 32 Mcdonnels Road, Young. Afternoon tea will be provided as Lyn shares her passion for Operational Christmas Child.

“My passion is the Christmas box project,” Lyn said. “I love it. I have been involved for about 15 years. I have built up many friendships in this ministry.”

Lyn said that people had been very supportive and willing to be involved through packing a shoebox, sewing and knitting items, and donating money and items. All donations are very much appreciated.

For those who don’t know about Operation Christmas Child, people from around the world pack a shoebox with simple gifts for kids in underprivileged countries who have nothing; in most instances, they have never received a gift - ever.

There is a brochure that details what can and cannot be included in a gift box, but they are very simple.

  • Something to love (teddy bear, doll).
  • Something to wear (hat, shorts, t-shirt, skirt, dress, underwear)
  • Something to play with (tennis ball, skipping rope, toy cars)
  • Something for school (notebook, pencils)
  • Something for personal hygiene (soap, face washer, toothbrush)
  • Something special (a letter and photo of yourself)

“I love the concept of the gift boxes and the opportunity for the children and families through the Greatest Journey Program to come to know and love Jesus our Lord and Saviour.”

“The impact of one shoebox and what it can turn into and be able to pray and thank God for these opportunities to spread the gospel so people can know Jesus.”

People can register their box online for the opportunity to follow it to the country it goes to. Boxes generally go to the South East Asia Pacific countries.

Last year, Lyn’s boxes went to Cambodia and Ukraine. Other boxes donated and packed locally went to Papua New Guinea.

This year’s boxes must be collected or returned by October 20. For more information or to RSVP for the launch, contact Lyn at 0428 699 779.
