Young Alexandra, Pipp and Georgia were named Hockey Juniors players of the week.

It was another great turnout for Junior Hockey on Sunday, with new players turning up to give it a go.

Three teams took turns battling it out on the hockey field, with all players showing off the skills they have learned this year. Alexandra, Pipp and Georgia were the players of the week. Next week is the final round for the Junior competition.

The Twilight competition was hotly contested between each of the teams. Captain of the Tactical Tappers Edwin Kwan said the game between the Tactical Tappers and the DTS was a back and forth affair.

“The tappers were up 2:0 at half time before DTS came back to equalise 2:2 at ¾ time,” Kwan said. “Charlie Bielefield terrorised the Tapper defenders, but the Tactical Tappers showed great determination and scored five or six unanswered goals in the last quarter for the breakaway win.”

Captain of The Dribblers Brendan Sheppard said the game between the Dribblers and the Blade Runners was a battle of youth and speed versus age and experience. “The Blade Runners turned up with energy and speed to burn,” Sheppard said. “Adam Gunderson directed his team around, helping them to control the ball from one end to the other, pressing hard and testing the Dribblers’ defence. They worked hard to score goals through Adam Gunderson and Elijah.”

Sheppard also used his skill and experience to cut through the Blade Runners defence on a number of occasions setting up goals to Fred Dimmick and Jock Bowman and being rewarded with one himself.

James Cronin had a solid game in defence and Michelle Cronin was everywhere. The final score was 3:2 Dribblers’ way.

Goal Rush Captain Matthew Hall said the game between Goal Rush and Grass Gliders was very close, with a lot of good defence from both teams, with the ball moving up and down the field.

“It was 2-all until the last ten minutes, which just shows how close this game was,” Hall said.

“Goal Rush and Grass Gliders played a tense tactical game with a midfield tussle that felt like an arm wrestle for the ages.

“Janice Dun and the Hall brothers had just enough legs to pip the Grass Gliders 3:2 despite the valiant defensive efforts of Hayley Gruber and Chris Hosken.”

Matt Hall, Steve Rudd and Janice Dunk were Goal Rush’s scorers on the day, with goal scorers Hayley Gruber and Cooper Sains for Grass Gliders.
