Young Grade 3 Zone Winners

Congratulations to the Grade 3 Pennant side on winning the Zone 8 Final at Cootamundra on Sunday. Young played Junee and the final score was 60 to 56.

All three of Young’s teams had good leads in the early stages but by the half-way mark Junee were almost level on two rinks although Young led by 15 shots.

After 45 ends Young still held an overall lead of 15 shots.

Junee reduced the gap considerably over the final ends but Young held on to win.

In the individual games David Quigley lost to Sean Smith 14–22, Damien Miller defeated Martin Cousley 27–12 and Brian Madden lost to Craig Shaw 19–22.

Young have qualified for the State Finals to be played at Forster on the last three days of June.

Our club’s Grade 7 side also performed very well at North Albury winning their two games on Saturday and losing the final on Sunday morning by 9 shots.

Against Wagga Rules Tony Ruhl lost by 4 shots, Joe Bargwanna won by 8 shots and Colin Stokell lost by 3 shots to give Young a 63–62 win.

Playing against the combined Adelong/Tarcutta side Tony Ruhl won by 10 shots, Joe Bargwanna won by 9 shots and Colin Stokell won by 11 shots for an overall score of 82 to 52.

In the final against Leeton Soldiers Tony Ruhl lost by 7 shots, Joe Bargwanna lost by 2 shots and Colin Stokell had a draw. The overall score was 55–46 in Leeton’s favour.

Over the weekend the Grade 5 finals were played at Young. On Saturday morning Boorowa Ex–Services had a 61–49 win over Darlington Point.

The result for the two games on Saturday afternoon were Wagga RSL defeated Walla Walla 59–49 and Temora Ex–Services defeated Boorowa Ex–Services 60–52.

The first half of the final on Sunday morning was very close with Wagga RSL leading 24–23 after 27 ends. After 42 ends the Temora Ex–Services side led 43–33 and despite Wagga reducing deficit to just 2 shots with just a few ends to go the Temora side went on to win 63–55.

During the week on Wednesday afternoon the final of the Women’s Club Singles was played with Kate Cooper opposed to Sheila Traynor.

This was a really close game throughout with the scores level on 7 occasions.

After the score was 16 all Sheila edged ahead to lead 22–18 but Kate scored a 4 on the next end to make the score 22–all.

Sheila won the next 2 ends and scored the 3 shots needed to win 25–22. Well done to both players on a very fine game.

For ANZAC Day on Thursday there were 20 players involved with 2 games of men’s pairs and 3 games of mixed pairs.

The vouchers went to Brian McNair and Les Fanning with a margin of 8 shots.

Other winning teams were Michael Adams and Max Penfold (5 shots), Heather Bailey and Ron Winders (5 shots), Jenny Holt and Denis Rosen (3 shots) and Sheila Traynor and Glen Benson (1 shot).

There were just 8 players involved on Saturday afternoon. The two winning teams were Michael Adams and Denis Rosen with a margin of 23 shots and Harold Anderson and Vic Brown with a margin of 5 shots.

Congratulations to five of our male bowlers who have been selected to represent Zone 8 in this years Interzone competition. Jono Watson, Damien Miller and David Quigley are in the Open Interzone Side and Russell Boyd and Peter Watts are in the Senior Interzone Side. There are just 12 players in each side.

The 5 shot margin was just what was needed to win the jackpot.

Players are advised to check the information on the notice board for these three matters: the Men’s Pairs Tournament to be played at the club on 25th and 26th May; Expressions of Interest for sub–committees of the new Riverina–Murray Region and the NSW Greenkeepers Championships to be played at the club next week.
