On Saturday the Young Sporties Bowling Club hosted the finals of the Zone 8 Fours Championships in very cold conditions.
Fortunately the games had finished before there was any rain.
The winners of the State division were Vic Moore, Josh Tootell, Max Scanlan and Darren Moore from Lavington Panthers.
They defeated the Narrandera team of Cody O’Keefe, Rodney Flack, Lincoln Gooley and Bruce Russell in a final where the result depended on the final few bowls.
After 19 ends the score was 18–all and Lavington scored 1 shot on the 20th end.
On the final end with only the skips bowls left to play Narrandera held 3 shots.
Moore trailed the jack with his first bowl to hold 1 shot and it remained that way with the final score being 20–18.
In the morning games Lavington defeated Young 17–16 and Narrandera defeated Tumut 22–13.
In the final of the Senior division Bruce Saffioti, Bill Robertson, Trevor Firman and Bruce Lack from Temora were too consistent for Rodney Cramp, Dennis Rawlings, Graham Rutherford and Bob Wilson from Wagga Rules and won 25–12.
Temora defeated Leeton and District 28–12 in one semi–final and Wagga Rules won their semi–final against Lavington 18–11.
The Narrandera team of Kevin Thomson, Mark Thornton, Peter Sheather and Steven Zak were the winners of the Open Reserve division when they defeated John Goggin, Jason Jones, Mike Barber and Terry McDonald from Cootamundra Ex–Services 27–9 in the final.
In the morning games Narrandera defeated Wagga Rules 21–15 and Cootamundra Ex defeated North Albury 22–9.
The winners of all three divisions will play in the State Finals in July.
For local bowls on Thursday afternoon there were 20 players involved in quite pleasant conditions.
Brian McNair and Joe Bargwanna won their game by 18 shots and that gave them the vouchers for the day.
In each of the other four games the winning margin was just 1 shot.
The winning teams were Alan Langford and Cliff Traynor, Justin Nowlan and Ian Schofield, Alan Gall and Bob Ruhl and Phil Taylor and Kevin Porter.
The cold conditions kept Saturday’s numbers down to just 12 participants.
Harold Anderson and John Cooper won their game by 7 shots and this gave them the vouchers for the afternoon.
Kevin Porter and Vic Brown had a winning margin of 3 shots and Albert Carter and Greg Woods won their game by 1 shot.
