Congratulations to John and Kate Cooper on winning the final of the Mixed Pairs Championship on Saturday afternoon.
They established an early lead over Kathryn Betcher and Peter Watts to be ahead 12–4 after 7 ends.
After 15 ends John and Kate led 23–8 and despite Kathryn and Peter reducing the margin the lead was too big to overcome and the final score was 24–15.
Two games of the Club Fours Championship were also played on Saturday.
The team of Bob Ruhl (substitute), Darryle Miller, Damien Miller and David Quigley completely dominated the scoring in their game against Aldo Malvicino, Tom Preston, Geoff DeBritt and Russell Boyd to win 27–3.
The other game saw Chris Wright, Bill Maloney, Graeme Edgerton and Cliff Traynor opposed to Scott Douglas, Albert Carter, Steve Walsh and Tony Ruhl.
After 7 ends Cliff’s team led 7-6 and they won 5 of the next 6 ends to lead 16–7. Tony’s team cut back the margin but Cliff’s team built it again to win 27–13.
For the second time recently the forecast of rain for Thursday saw play transferred to Wednesday afternoon.
Conditions on Wednesday were fine and sunny for the 14 players involved and Thursday was cold and wet in the afternoon.
The selection of teams for Wednesday was close to spot on with the winning margins being 2, 3 and 4.
Chris Wright, Michael Webb and Russell Boyd won the vouchers with their margin of 4 shots.
Alan Langford and Tom Preston won their game by 3 shots and Stuart Freudenstein and John Cooper won by 2 shots.
On Saturday in addition to the Championship play there were 14 men involved in Jackpot bowls.
The three games were closely contested with winning margins of 6, 4 and 1.
Joe Read and Denis Rosen had the 6 shot margin to claim the vouchers. Graham Edward, Brian Christie and Les Fanning had a 4 shot margin and Glen Seward and Brian Gibson won 21–20.
The weather was fine and sunny on Sunday when the club conducted a preliminary round of the BPL Cup.
Eight teams of triples had entered this Australia wide competition with two teams from Cowra, and one each from Temora and Cootamundra joining four teams from Young.
There were two sections of four teams and each team played three games during the day.
In Section 1 the winners were Russell Manning, Daryl Breust and Arty Stacey from Temora Ex–Services with 11 points.
This was a closely contested section with Colin Powell, Darryle Miller and Ian Schofield scoring 10 points and the Cowra team of Marc Eisenhauser, Paul Druery and Greg Nicholls scoring 9 points.
In Section 2 the team of Jonathon Watson, Damien Miller and David Quigley were the winners with 14 points.
Jim McNaught, Anthony Smith and John Pickard from Cowra scored 9 points and Jill Rosen, Les Fanning and Denis Rosen finished with 7 points.
The winners of each section will progress to regional play-offs.
Players are reminded that entry details for the sectional rounds of the 2023-24 Zone 8 Pairs Championships are on the notice board. Entries for these events close on Thursday 20th July.
The club’s Open Pennants Grade 4 side will be playing in the Bowls NSW State Finals at Tamworth starting on Friday 30th June.
They play two sectional games on Friday and a further sectional game on the Saturday morning.
Depending on their results in these three games they can qualify for the quarter-finals to be played on Saturday afternoon.
The semi-finals and final are to be played on Sunday 2nd July.
The club congratulates the side on reaching the State Finals and wishes them well in their games.
