First, I must apologise for not having any bowls notes last week. One of our regular bowlers asked me why when we crossed paths on Saturday morning.

It was a busy time at the Bowling Club during the past two weeks with three tournaments as part of our Cherry Festival Bowls Carnival.

There were 22 teams involved in the Women’s Triples on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd November and they enjoyed quite good conditions. They played five games over the two days.

The winners for the event were Kerry Farrely, Jenny Clark and Leanne Smith (Oak Flats and Merrylands) with 5 wins and a margin of 53 shots.

Lisa Boyd, Teresa Tuckerman and Judith Staunton (Young and Clovelly) were in second place with 4 wins and a 45 shot margin and they finished just in front of the Tuggeranong team of Kathy Baldry, Polly Pilcher and Sally Winter who also won 4 games and had a margin of 43 shots.

The Mixed Pairs tournament was played on Saturday and Sunday with very doubtful weather conditions on the Saturday morning. The six games were completed as scheduled with a short rain interruption late into the sixth game.

Cheryl Cook and Jonathon Watson won all 6 games and their margin of 68 shots saw them finish in front of John and Kate Cooper who also won 6 games and had a margin of 30 shots.

Third place went to Robyn and Neville Corby from Crookwell who had 5 wins and a draw and a margin of 26 shots.

The Calcutta for the Men’s Triples was held on Monday 27th and was very well supported by the players for the tournament.

Special thanks to Joe Bargwanna, John Gerrard and Mark Jolliffe for their auctioning during the evening. Thanks also to those club members who helped with the organisation of the Calcutta.

The first game of the Men’s Triples tournament on Tuesday morning was completed with some showery weather causing disruption to play. Unfortunately, the rain on Tuesday afternoon prevented the second game from being completed.

There was further heavy rain on Wednesday morning and play in the third game was stopped after just a few ends and no further play was possible on Wednesday.

An 8 am start was scheduled for Thursday morning with a revised number of ends for three games planned. The overnight rain on Wednesday night and a heavy downpour at about 5 am on Thursday morning prevented the planned early start taking place.

With very little chance of a sensible conclusion to the tournament the committee decided that the tournament should be abandoned. This was a very disappointing conclusion to the Bowls Carnival.

There were many people involved in the organisation of these tournaments – the members of the men’s and women’s bowls committees, the greenkeepers, staff members at Young Services Club, the bar staff at the Bowling Club, the staff at Hussy Kitchens and the umpires.

The tournament organisers would like to thank all those club members who contributed and also pass on the appreciation of the players involved. More than 20 local businesses and organisations were sponsors of the Bowls Carnival and their support is much appreciated by the organisers and also by the players.

On Sunday the team of Brian Christie, Albert Carter, Les Fanning and Denis Rosen played in the final of the Zone 8 Senior Fours Championship at Narrandera. Unfortunately, the local team skipped by Richard Durnan proved too strong on the day to win the game 21–12.

Play on Saturday afternoon saw just 10 players involved. No doubt there were others involved with Cherry Festival activities on the day.

The winners for the two games were Albert Carter and Vic Brown with a margin of 5 shots and Max Penfold, Don Grant and Denis Rosen with a margin of 10 shots.
