The Lions Club of Young will host a Lifestyle and Wellbeing Expo on Saturday, July 29 focused on taking power over diabetes.
Aims for the four-hour expo include:
- Enhancing skills;
- Meeting with others from the community to discuss self-management; and
- Engaging with health professionals to support health.
As with anything life-changing, you don’t get really good at dealing with diabetes overnight.
It is something that takes time.
Everyone living with diabetes can remember when they first learned of their diagnosis and were given the basics of what they needed to take care of themselves.
- Make and eat healthy food;
- Be active most days;
- Test your blood glucose;
- Take medicines as prescribed, even if you feel good;
- Learn to manage stress;
- Cope with the emotional side of diabetes; and
- Go to checkups.
That list might look easy on paper, but the challenge is to make those changes work in the real world you live in.
How are these changes going to affect the whole family?
What happens when we go on holiday or I have to attend a work function?
There are plenty of questions that arise after a diagnosis of diabetes.
Using medications effectively - what are the pros and cons of using alternative medications?
What is the best way to care for my eyesight?
ow can technology support me now and into the future?
Can I still eat out and enjoy food? How?
The expo will demonstrate how the Lions Club of Young supports diabetes in Australia and around the world.
If you would like to learn how to retain power over diabetes, head to the Marie McCormick Centre at 129 Main Street Young on Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm.
