Saving Rural Lives One Appointment At a Time

On Monday the 22nd of May, registered nurse Bill and his wife Deb Powell set up shop out the front of the court house in Boorowa, offering free health checks to the community with the Men’s Health Education Rural Van (MHERV).
When it comes to medical staffing in rural communities, there are not a lot of options, the doctors that are in the community are usually booked out or with a long wait time to go with the appointment due to the scarcity of qualified medical professionals.
MHERV takes away those issues, with the convenience of only being 15 minute appointments and a casual attitude makes many rural community members prefer to use Bill and his services.
Along with the convenience of MHERV comes 45 years of experience from Bill meaning people are receiving quality care.
MHERV are making these services accessible to the community and have saved many lives in the past 2 years, from heart attacks to mental health check ups, Bill has done it all!
Last year while working with MHERV, Bill provided care to over an impressive 3000 patients.
According to the MHERV website, 41,000 Australian men die each year from preventable diseases. With such confronting statistics. it is evident on why this is such an important service for rural Australians.
Originally MHERV was solely implemented for men but has now opened up to women, giving more opportunities to save rural lives.
Without the support of community donations, The Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution and volunteers from The Rotary Clubs across the state, this mission would not be possible.
The donations have saved many lives and improved the quality of life for many people.
