Young junior hockey players wowed the crowds on Sunday, October 26 with some incredibly exciting and skillful play.

Young Hockey Secretary Edwina Plante said it was fantastic to see how quickly their skills were developing.

“We were impressed with how well they were able to find space and pass the ball to their teammates this week,” Planten said.

“Congratulations to Alexis, Sophie and Gwynnie on being chosen as players of the day.”

Week three of the competition will be held next Sunday, November 3 at 3:30 pm.

It was another great afternoon as the Twilight Competition hit the Sawpit Gully Hockey Fields.

Planten said they welcomed new players to the fields, with some of them promising to return next week.

“With growing team numbers, we saw all teams at full strength this week, which meant the games were tough and great to watch,” Planten said.

“Blade Runners defeated Grass Gliders in what was an incredibly close match, with both teams a constant threat of scoring.”

“Both teams held strong in defence, making this anyone’s game.”

“However, it was the Blade Runners who took the victory this week.”

Blade Runners defeated Grass Gliders 3:2, with Chris Hosken and Addison Dovern scoring for the Grass Gliders and Greg Bannister and Izack Meharg scoring for Blade Runners.

Goal Rush took on DTS in the second match of the day.

“This was another great game to watch and the final score doesn’t represent the evenness of this game,” Planten said.

“DTS put up a fierce attack, however, despite their efforts, found it hard to penetrate the Goal Rush Defence.”

Goal Rush took their second win for the competition, defeating DTS 6:3.

David Hall, Janice Dunk, Lucy Dunk, Faith Freeman and Kyle McGovern scored for Goal Rush, while Michael Skillen, Annabelle Cannon and Nathan Hunter scored for DTS.

Tactical Tappers took on The Dribblers in the final match of the day.

“The Tactical Tappers had The Dribblers running back in defence as soon as the whistle blew,” Planten said.

“However, with some quick manoeuvres and passes into the goal circle, The Dribblers kept pace.”

“In the final half the Tactical Tappers ran away with the lead. The Tactical Tappers retained their place at the top of the ladder, defeating The Dribblers 8:4.”

Bryce Weedon, Hannington Sibanda, Nothabo Sibanda, Jude Sibanda, Joshua Sibanda and Edwin Kwan scored for the Tactical Tappers, while Brendan Sheppard, Michelle Cronin, Tully Bowman and Jock Bowman scored for The Dribblers, thanks to some great teamwork and quick stick skills in the circle.

Don’t miss the action-packed games on the field next weekend, as the Twilight Competition heats up.
