It was a perfect afternoon for hockey on Sunday, October 19 as the six teams kicked off round 1 of the Spring Twilight Competition.
Young Hockey Secretary Edwina Planten said there was a great vibe down on the hockey fields.
“We saw three fantastic games, with all players having a lot of fun,” she said.
The first game played out between Goal Rush and The Dribblers.
“Goal Rush started off strong, with a quick concession of goals taking the early lead in the first half,” Planten said.
“The Hall brothers proved strong in defence, making it hard for The Dribblers to score.”
“However, the Dribblers started to find their groove in the second half, and with some good passes and quick moves, were able to put away two goals leaving the score at 5-2 to Goal Rush.”
Goal scorers for Goal Rush were Matthew Hall, David Hall, Janice Dunk and Faith Freeman while Brendan Sheppard and James Cronin scored for The Dribblers.
The Tactical Tappers took on the Blade Runners in the second game.
“The Tactical Tappers are going to be a tough team to beat this year with a lot of experience and youth on their side,” Planten said.
“They took on the Blade Runners, who played short this week.”
“The Blade Runners gave their all, but without the numbers on their side were not able to hamper the Tactical Tappers’ attack at the goals.”
“The Tactical Tappers walked away victorious with a 7-3 win.”
Greg Bannister and Tracey Lamb scored for the Blade Runners while Amy Harding, Hannington Sibanda, Joshua Sibanda, Nothabo Sibanda and Edwin Kwan were goal scorers for the Tactical Tappers.
In the third and final game of the day, the Grass Gliders faced DTS.
“This game was a close one, with both teams having to defend their goals against numerous short corners,” Planten said.
In the end, though, the Grass Gliders took the win, defeating DTS 4-1.
Michael Skillen scored for DTS while Tahlia Gruber, Paul Gruber, Hayley Gruber and Chris Hosken scored for the Grass Gliders.
The first game of junior hockey for the season also took place on Sunday, with youngsters putting their learned skills into practice, playing as a team and displaying some great trapping, tackles, passing and a goal or two.
