It appears to be a common story but even though COVID has abated somewhat, it seems to have taken the wind out of a lot of people’s sails.
It seems to have at least changed their social habits according to the Thursday Craft Group at Murringo’s Maria Wylie.
“Our Craft Group has had its last gathering,” Ms Wylie said. “Unfortunately, the numbers just weren’t there. We only ever got a maximum of about eight people, even though we advertised. Most of the group members were ladies over 60. Other people would drop in for a chat if they saw a car they recognised or if they needed directions or if they were just curious.”
“I think the numbers dropped because of the health status of the group members.Lots of absences were due to ill health and doctors appointments here, there and everywhere, literally.”
The group met every second Thursday for over a year, advertising, and putting posters in shop windows and letterbox drops in Murringo. During that time, Ms Wylie said they explored spinning, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, embroidery, patchwork, pattern-making, and jewellery. “We had people coming from Boorowa and Young, as well as Murringo, and maybe the cost of fuel and the state of the roads discouraged people - I don’t know,” Ms Wylie said.
“It’s a shame because group activities can inspire people, can make them feel connected, and the information sharing was really valuable. The group had a good vibe, we just didn’t have enough numbers.”
In the event that there are crafters out there interested in getting together, talking, eating, exchanging information on a wide range of topics and sharing their love of crafting, the group would be open to the possibility of regathering.
