The Young Black Dog Ride will ride around the region on Sunday the 16th of March to raise awareness of depression and suicide prevention.
Tex Quigg began the Young chapter of the Black Dog Ride following a huge loss.
“I started the Young Black Dog Ride 4 years ago after losing my Mum in 2020 to suicide after her long battle with depression.”
“After starting the Black Dog Ride, I have heard a lot of peoples stories, how they have been touched by the black dog so if we can get people talking about it, it may just save someone.”
This year’s Young Black Dog Ride will commence with registrations at 7am at the Young Railway Station.
There will be a brief, a Welcome to Country and guest speakers before stands up at 9.30am.
The first stop for the ride will be the Terminus Hotel in Temora.
Stands up at 11.30am when the ride will head to Stockinbingal.
As well as lunch and raffles at the Stockinbingal Bowling Club, veteran Dale Morton will be raising money for the cause when his Shave A Veteran campaign is completed at the Club.
“I’m trying to raise funds for Black Dog
Ride so more of the word can get out there that no matter how hard life hits you, you don’t have to take your own life,” said Dale.
Rachel Denniss will also be having her hair cropped for the cause.
Stands will be up at 2.30pm when the ride will head to Wallendbeen.
The ride will then head back to Young for the final stop at the Commercial Hotel.
The last of the raffles will be drawn to complete the day.
Tex encourages everyone to come out and support the cause.
“It’s about a relaxing ride and getting everyone talking.”
“Cars are more than welcome to follow along behind the bikes for what should be a great day.”
“Please come along and say gday or if you would like to pop down to any of our stops and just look at the bikes or have a chat, please do.”
In only 4 years, Tex says the Young Black Dog Ride has been asked to do a number of events including Bunnings nights, the Harden Kite Festival, Battle of the Bands Rock Recovery and the Young Black Dog Show and Shine, a bike show in conjunction with the Young Show.
“So in some way I hope we are making a difference just by being there and having people come up and talking to us.”
“We aren’t professionals, we are normal everyday people who love to ride our bikes. But we are a set of ears if anyone wants to have a chat.”
“When I say we, it’s a great team. We are all in a group called the Wandering Wedge Tails on Facebook where we support each other and talk about how we can help people with the Black Dog Ride.”
“I would be lost with out them. They are an amazing group of people.”
Tex thanked the generous sponsors of the Black Dog Ride, saying they are amazing.
