Hayley Gruber and Greg Bannister go head to head during the match between the Blade Runners and the Grass Gliders on Sunday, December 1.

Despite the rain stopping and the sun shining, one of the fields was too wet to play on Sunday, December 1.

Young Combined Hockey Association Secretary Edwina Planten said that wasn’t enough to stop round 7 of the Young Twilight Hockey competition, though.

“Some quick thinking from committee members saw the round saved with a few changes to the draw,” Planten said. “Each game ran for 30 minutes, with 15 minute halves.”

The first game saw the Blade Runners take on the Grass Gliders. Brendan Sheppard filled in for the Blade Runners and scored quickly in the first half, kicking off the game and setting the momentum.

“The Grass Gliders stepped up their defence, with Paul Gruber and William Byrnes making it a challenge for the Blade Runners to get past,” Planten said.

“Chris Hosken was strong at moving the ball down the field, with Hayley Gruber moving well in the circle. However, despite their best efforts, Grass Gliders were unable to score.”

“Greg Bannister, Elijah Meharg and Izack Meharg worked well together, making numerous attempts at goal for the Blade Runners. The Blade Runners walked away with the win, after James Cronin and Elijah Meharg scored two further goals.”

Blade Runners defeated Grass Gliders 3 - 0. James Cronin, Brendan Sheppart and Elijah Meharge scored for the Blade Runners.

Top of the ladder Tactical Tappers took on The Dribblers in the second game of the day.

“It didn’t take long for the first goal to be scored in this game, with Edwin Kwan effortlessly dodging The Dribblers defence to take the first goal for the Tactical Tappers,” Planten said. “Bryce Weedon played a strong game in the middle, trapping passes and making it hard for The Dribblers to move down the field. He managed to convert one of his turnovers, increasing Tactical Tappers lead.”

“The Dribblers didn’t give up, and James Cronin and Michelle Cronin shut down as many plays as they could, with Fred Dimmick being a formidable opponent in the goals. The Dribblers managed to score two goals in the game, however despite their best efforts they could not hold back the Tactical Tappers.”

The Tactical Tappers took the win, 5 - 2. Bryce Weedon, Amy Harding, Edwin Kwan, David Hall, William Byrnes scored for the Tactical Tappers, while James Cronin and Izack Meharg scored for The Dribblers.

The final game of the day saw Goal Rush and DTS go head to head. What an exciting game it was.

“It was end to end hockey, with both teams having numerous attempts at goal, however falling short of the mark,” Planten said.

“Lucy Dunk played a strong game for Goal Rush. She made it difficult for DTS players moving the ball through the middle of the field, and with some quick moves in the circle, scored a goal for her team.”

“Faith Freeman also played a strong game on the win, using her ball skills to help her team score. Janice Dunk has some impressive tackles and strong passes down the field.”

“DTS moved the ball quickly, with Charlie Bielefeld and Bobby Simms outrunning the Goal Rush team, with each scoring for DTS. Fiona Douglas and Isabelle Douglas played a strong defensive game, while Annabelle Cannon displayed a marked improvement in her skills. Michael Skillen had some fancy moves on the field, however, often found himself coming up against the Hall brothers’ defence.”

In the end Goal Rush took the win against DTS, 3 - 2. David Hall, Lucy Dunk, Michael Adams scored for Goal Rush, while Charlie Bielefeld and Bobbie Simms scored for DTS.

Only one round remains of the Twilight Competition. The team on top of the ladder will be the winners - that place currently belongs to the Tactical Tappers.
