Young Div 3 at Ballina

Last week the Young Women’s Bowling Club competed in the State Finals for Division 3 at Ballina.

Unfortunately, several players who had participated in the District qualifying rounds were unable to travel to Ballina and special permission was needed to have two players from other clubs play in the Young side and the players were very grateful that these two players were prepared to help them out.

With the trip to Ballina being 1096 kilometres there was an overnight stay on the way up and again on the return journey.

The weather defied the forecasters and was fine for the four days but windy to very windy every day.

The teams that played were as follows – Team 1 – Jenny Holt, Elaine Bosworth (Ballina), Jill Rosen and Kate Cooper and Team 2 – Sheila Traynor, Robyn Apps, Judith Mulligan (Grenfell) and Margaret Gailey.

The first sectional game was against West Tamworth and at the half-way mark Young led 22–21. After 40 ends Young were behind 34–38 but both teams scored 2 shots on their final end to make the overall score 38–all. Team 1 lost 17–23 and Team 2 won 21–15.

In that round the other two sides in the section Tuncurry Beach and Tathra Beach played a 35–all draw. This meant that all four sides had scored two-and-a-half points.

In the second round Young played Tuncurry Beach and Team 1 from Tuncurry were in great form and won their game 34–9. Team 2 for Young won their game 17–16 to give the side 1 point for the round.

West Tamworth defeated Tathra Beach on both rinks to take all 5 points and be the leading team in the section at the end of the first day.

In the final sectional game Young and Tathra Beach had a close contest from start to finish.

After 21 ends Young led 16–11 and after 37 ends they were in front 27–23.

With the final bowl of the game to be played Young were on 30 and Tathra Beach on 29 and Young held shot right near the jack. The Tathra skip played a perfect bowl to claim the shot and the game was drawn at 30–all.

Tuncurry Beach defeated West Tamworth in their game so both of these clubs progressed to the quarter–finals.

The Young side acquitted themselves well and can be very proud of their results at this level. Just 1 extra shot in their first and third sectional games would have seen them progress to the knock–out stage.

West Tamworth and Tahra Beach both won their quarter–finals by margins of more than 25 shots defeating Park Beach and Wenty Leagues.

Tea Gardens defeated West Tamworth in one semi–final and Tuncurry Beach defeated Marks Point in the other.

Tea Gardens defeated Tuncurry Beach 56–31 in the final with Tea Gardens playing very consistent bowls and Tuncurry Beach not able to produce the form that they had shown in their previous four games.
